First Two Weeks

  1. Dear Julie: WOW!!! What a phenomenal writer you are!!! Am so glad you're feeling inclined to share your experiences. Breathing a large SIGH aloud for all of you...and the web of adjustments you're facing. I'm sure having Rose and Nola in their respective school rhythms will assist them quickly in their acclimation. Sending you love and support as you find new friends yourself, and as you find the new ground to be supportive underneath your feet. Love Harriet

  2. Hi Julie,
Your Mom sent me your blog-all your new adventures sound very familiar to me. It was a lot easier to move to Canada (which we thought was just like the Pacific NW)WRONG with no children to worry about. Another difference was arriving in Sask. in the day, having to walk on the tarmack, both in Calgary and Sask. to --40 celcius.. Learned how to convert the temp, but Icould tell it was very, very cold, oh but you won't feel it because it's a dry cold. RIGHT! Talk about surprised.
On our arrival,( New Years Eve)so no taxi's available, a very kind local offered to drive us to our new apartment in his truck.
So off we went(not a worry in the world) four hugh suitcases and carry ons thrown in the back of the pickup, could have been a mass murderer for all we knew. He dropped us right at the front door of our beautiful condo building, helped us into the elevator, and I was pleasently surprised how beautiful our unit was(we also had a view of the river and downtown.) He left after much thanks from us and went back to pick up his wife at the airport, who had arrived on the same flight. We were very impressed and thought only in a small town would this happen.
Woke up the next morning, sat by the window and cried(what the hell did I do?) I joined every thing I could, after scouring the local newspaper. Everyone was so friendly, and I began making life long friends,(thank god, since Otto traveled alot.) Once I got familiar with driving our new Jeep, figured how to manage the ice ruts in all the side streets, I was off and running.
    Does all this sound familiar?
It was a wonderful experience and we're glad we took the opportunity to do this. With hoar frosts, northern lights, ice carvings during winter holidays, and ice crystals out side my window every morning, I became fasinated with the magical winters. Summers were very hot, with huge black flies and manic mosquitoes, terrible.
So I'm sure you will feel the same as I did after a while. Enjoy and take it all in. It will be a great experience for all of you.
Thanks for writing your blog and have fun.....
    Love, Marie
